Principles of Pilates
Although there is no mention of Joseph Pilates listing an order of principles
for Contrology, over the years instructors have keyed in on six focal points
used within each exercise, regardless of whether the exercise is performed
on the floor or any of the pieces of Pilates equipment.
We’ll go into more detail about how to incorporate these principles directly
into your athletic training in chapter 5.
Six Pilates Principles
1. Breathing—This releases stress from your body, creates a deeper
connection to your core, and releases stiffness within your spine.
2. Centering—By physically bringing your focus to the center of your
body, also known as your powerhouse, you feel the connection
between the front and back of the body, and from your ribs to your
pubic bone.
3. Concentration—By staying present in what you are doing at that
moment you can focus on each exercise and its purpose.
4. Coordination—Coordinating your brain and body, and your breath and
your movement, increases your brain’s control of your body’s movement and dynamic function.
5. Flow—Each Pilates movement should be smooth and fluid. The exercises should flow from one movement to the next without the feeling
of stopping and starting each exercise.
6. Precision (otherwise known as control)—Work with flow, not momentum. Control, rather than intensity or repetition, is key to performing
the exercises correctly. Perform all of your movements with precision
to gain the maximum benefits.
